In the middle of Grant Thorold Park on the East Marsh, something special is happening. What started as a forest school has grown into a warm, welcoming hub for the whole community — a place where people of all ages can connect, recharge, and belong. At the heart of it all is Michelle Cook, a passionate educator, local leader, and founder of The Canopy Community Hub.
Meet Michelle
Michelle runs three local preschools with a simple belief: every child, no matter where they’re born, deserves equal opportunities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she saw that parents and families on the East Marsh needed more than early years education — they needed support, connection, and a safe space. So she opened The Canopy.
“If your house is cold and you can’t afford the heating, come into The Canopy. We’re a warm space. You don’t have to buy anything — and we’ll likely give you something free to eat or drink.”
What is The Canopy?
Families visit to take part in Lego Club, forest school, art groups, and gentle seated exercise classes. Children on the park pop in for free fruit and a drink. Older people join walking groups, Pilates or mindfulness sessions — or simply come for a chat, a game of Scrabble, and a slice of cake. Andy’s Man Club meets weekly, drawing around 30–40 men for mental health support. Free children’s breakfasts — pancakes, cereal, porridge, fruit — are available every morning, no questions asked.
Community impact
“Togetherness. Connection. Safety. If you feel vulnerable, you can walk in. If you’re lonely, you’ll be welcomed.” With a team of staff across all three education sites, the hub is creating jobs for local people and quietly transforming lives. The Canopy has grown thanks to support from Children in Need, Sport England, North East Lincolnshire Council warm spaces grants, and local businesses.
How you can support The Canopy
Sponsor a leaf on their large indoor tree (£120 as a local business), fund a session, volunteer at events, or simply spread the word. “We’re the canopy of the East Marsh. Everyone is welcome and belongs a place beneath our branches.”
